Tom Banton is struggling, seriously struggling. However, he need look no further than Haseeb Hameed for inspiration. They are of course contrasting players, expected to thrive in different formats of the game but still, Hameed is a young player who tasted international cricket only to struggle thereafter… but then fought back!
Bizarrely, Banton opened the batting at the start of the County Championship season. He was found to be an alarming way out of his depth. He finished the campaign with only one half-century from fourteen innings at a paltry average of 18.41! Put aside one week that included knocks of 77 and a 47-ball ton in the T20 Blast, 2021 really has been a horror show. He did get called upto the England squad around that time but was surely a long way from World Cup consideration. He made only six and a duck on T20 Finals Day and has withdrawn from the BBL. Hopefully a refresh will serve him well.
It’s not nice to see somebody struggle so badly but unlike many young players, Banton’s got some history in the bank, so won’t be given up on just yet. There are examples of players around the world that prove that been able to score the odd twenty at a strike rate of 140 can earn you some gigs. Somehow, Banton (Who averages less than thirty in all formats of the game!) has to find a way to repeat his previous heroics on a more regular basis.
