Whether it’s the Premier League or various cup competitions, the 2021-22 season is well under way. Which players have performed well in the early stages of the campaign and should be in consideration for England selection by Gareth Southgate?
Crystal Palace’s Conor Gallagher for one! He’s got both tenacity and creativity. He gets stuck in, breaks up play but also offers something going forward. His finishing is far from errr, the finished article but we need to move on from Jordan Henderson. With Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice established in midfield, Jude Bellingham looking like a fine prospect and James Ward-Prowse a younger upgrade on Henderson, Gallagher would be a sensible option to add to the mix.
Next… Etienne Green. Who you say? Only (Rather appropriately) St Etienne shotstopper Etienne Green. Still only 21, Green has established himself as the club’s number one following some penalty heroics on debut. He recently earned a call-up to England under-21s after opting for the country of his father over his mother. All of a sudden, England are reasonably well stocked on the goalkeeper front. I’m slightly surprised that Green has opted for England but if he can maintain his early Ligue 1 standard then he could come into the mix!
I mentioned Andros Townsend in a previous post…
The wideman has begun life at Goodison Park extremely well. He has contributed four goals and three assists in eight appearances across all competitions. It’s been a few years since the thirty-year-old won the last of his thirteen caps but he’s still got the ability to make things happen. Townsend’s teammate Demarai Gray would be a younger alternative to… Townsend! A perennial substitute throughout his time at Leicester City, he’s already found the back of the net three times since relocating to Merseyside. He scored eight times in 26 appearances for England Under-21s and has previously been in full squads. He certainly merits selection more than Jadon Sancho!
Don’t forget Tammy Abraham either! He’s joined Serie A side Roma and like Townsend and Gray, has made an encouraging start to the 2021-22 campaign. The six-cap striker has both scored and assisted twice for his new employers.
Who do you think might have caught Gareth Southgate’s eye?
