A big flaw in my cricket fandom is that I don’t get to watch much cricket!
I did however catch some of The Hundred and Tymal Mills impressed me. His job is literally to bowl 24 (Or in this case 20) deliveries every few days, some of the year. As absurd as this may sound, when I played amateur cricket, I liked to get on and bowl each ball so as not to lose my rhythm. Mills does the opposite. He slows it down, something that he’ll have to get use to under Eoin Morgan’s captaincy! He seems to make every delivery an event. He pauses, takes a breath, does a jig then runs into bowl. He was consistently extremely economical as well as picking up wickets.
Carlos Brathwaite described Chris Jordan as “The best death bowler in the world”! No Carlos, he’s just a guy who has bowled at the death a lot. Would I take him to the World Cup for some sub fielding? Yeah!
Tymal Mills was a T20 specialist before it was a thing. It’s great that he’s overcome injury/medical problems and performed so well. It’s a big deal to suddenly step up for the World Cup (No prep matches in Pakistan now!) and it’ll be interesting to see how he holds it together if the best players really come at him!
