Five Animal Films to Watch

Watership Down (1978)

I think that Watership Down was a footnote in my animation recommendations…

Here, it makes the recommended five!

This film is dark… brutal and dark! The surreal opening passages are brilliant before we move on to the more lifelike but equally scary core of the movie. Bloodstained fields, bunnies choking to death and some extremely nasty rabbits, mean that this may not be a film for very young children. It is however, essential viewing!

Alligator (1980)

This is one of those films that I watched over and over as a kid. It’s amazing how much of this Chicago based rampage stays in my mind.

In summary, a baby Alligator gets flushed down a toilet. A few years later… carnage!

Orca the Killer Whale (1977)

Yes it was released a couple of years after Jaws but I actually found this film a little more… deep!

Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling and Bo Derek star in this vengeful epic!

Never Cry Wolf (1983)

Why are Caribou herds in the Canadian Arctic declining? Send a man with a typewriter into the wild and find out!

A visually stunning film that showcases Canada’s gorgeous landscapes, Charles Martin Smith leads the cast in isolation.

Grizzly (1976)

Nothing subtle here. A big bear. Characters going exactly where you know they shouldn’t!
